Another birthday, another fresh start and some new music.

I am an eternal optimist. I leap excitedly into each new day welcoming the opportunity and the challenge of painting on a fresh canvas. Today on my birthday I am extra excited by a special creative opportunity in the new music of FluteDaddy.

Recently I have been experimenting with new ways of expression with our freestyle jazz group – Freebird. Loyal FluteDaddy fans, who enjoyed our bossa nova and traditional jazz groups, came to several Freebird performances and have generously offered me some feedback.

Fans say they they loved the creativity of the freestyle music, and would enjoy it more with some changes – Make the songs shorter, play more of the pop tunes and emphasize the exciting rhythm grooves we have been creating.

Thank you! We hear you! We are on the same page, and on October 28th we will present our Blue Note Jazz concert with shorter tunes and our new, blue recipe: Take a familiar tune, cook it in bluesy harmonies and jazzy rhythms and add a dash of funk. Serve it with soulful flute over a bed of groovy keyboards bass and drums for delicious fun!

And for y’all who want to hear more of our collective, freestyle improv, we will add a little of that on a couple of featured tunes, and you will contribute to the creative process.

So yes, faithful fans and newcomers, do come join us on October 28 at 7:30 PM at Smokebrush for the new Blue Note Jazz featuring Ken Janzen on Keyboard and synthesizer, Marc Neihof on bass and Dennis Bueno on drums and percussion. And if you haven’t heard FluteDaddy in a while you are overdue to be tickled.

Joseph

“The origin of the term “the blues” was most likely derived from mysticism involving blue indigo, which was used by many West African cultures in death and mourning ceremonies where all the mourner’s garments would have been dyed blue to indicate suffering.” Wikipedia

You don’t have to be in mourning to enjoy the seven styles of blues we’ll be playing at Smokebrush on Sunday night Sept 23 starting at 7:30 PM. But, it would be fun to have you show up in something blue – a shirt, a hat, a scarf, jewelry or whatever.

Ken Janzen the fine jazz pianist, Marc Neihof premier bassist , Dick Cunico the drummer for all seasons and yours truly will play bebop, cool, funky, island, N’arlins, latin, and true blues. W’ll also do some of our unique collective improvisation to create new blue art in the moment. It’s definitely engaging and fun!

Tickets are $7 at the door or you can reserve online and walk right in. come on down and have fun with us and… wear your blue.

Normally 4 F is a Selective Service System Rating which designates not acceptable for military service under the established physical, mental, or moral standards. In this case 4F is a reminder of what is waiting for you next Sunday evening August 26 at 7:30 PM – a totally engaging musical experience.

Fourth Sunday Of The Month at Marmalade at Smokebrush: FluteDaddy & Freebird in Sunday evening concert.

Freebird: A musical group that paints in collective improvisation on the canvas of familiar songs to create new musical art in the moment. Through free flowing dialogue the musicians become joined in heart and mind and the result is spontaneous songs of the soul.

Fusion: A musical style expressed by Freebird which melds blues, rock, funk. pop and jazz.

Fun: What audiences have as they become engaged in the creative conversation and enjoy the art.

Our first concert with the new quartet, which added Jana Lee Ross’s keyboard to Lee Garner’s bass, Dick Cunico’s drums and FluteDaddy’s tootin’ was one month ago. People really enjoyed it and when we asked how they would describe it the word they responded with most was “engaging.” They warned us that we had set the bar really high and the we’d have to be at least as great next time. No pressure eh?

When I came up with the idea for this group I sort of heard what it might sound like, in my head, but what was stronger was how it would feel. I’m thrilled to say it felt exactly as I imagined and I was thrilled with the music we created…and a part of me was even a little surprised. The group is now even more confident that our approach to creativity is working and even more excited to engage our audience again. This month as we did last month, we use some iconic songs, with unique rhythmic treatments as launch pads.

Marmalade at Smokebrush is a delightful music venue. I played improvised alto flute there once for a Yoga class that Kat Tudor was teaching, was delighted with the acoustics and knew it was the perfect space for our creative art. The space allows us to play with very little amplification and sometimes none at all. The warmth of the space helps create an intimate connection between musicians and with the audience.

Do come join us on Sunday August 26. This concert we will change the format slightly to play to sets with a break between. Smokebrush will have food and drink available including wines and beers.

Oh Baby! FluteDaddy & Freebird was over the moon they say!

If you were one of the great audience at Marmalade At Smokebrush for the First FluteDaddy & Freebird quartet concert July 22, you know what I am talking about. Thank you for coming out to listen and support us. Your engaged listening stimulated us to stretch out and do the creative things we love. And your feedback was great. One of my favorite comments came from a died-in-the-wool jazz enthusiast who told me,” The only reason I came tonight was to support you, because this is really not my kind of jazz. But, I had a really great time and totally enjoyed the music!”

It has been difficult to describe our music to people. To some jazz buffs it is “freestyle jazz” while newer and younger listeners liken us to a “jam band” and still others call it jazz fusion. When I asked some people at the concert how they would describe the music to others, several said, “engaging.” That is what we hope to create – an engaging musical dialogue that the audience is a part of. And I think our tagline describes the product of that dialogue well, “Spontaneous songs from the soul.”

The audience also loved Marmalade and called it a great venue for great listening.

The Fourth Is Now Freebird Sunday

We have some great news – we’ll be back on the 4th Sunday of each month with another concert, Starting on Sunday August 26 at 7:30 PM. We will continue the same musical format of using familiar jazz or pop tunes as canvases for creating original art in the moment. And as some
of you know, we color outside the lines and that is when the music gets really exciting.

Plan to join us August 24 when we will be jammin and bopin, rolling in the deep, pulling some new rabbits out of the hat and evoking the Wonder of Stevie.
